The Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster is a metropolitan borough of South Yorkshire in Yorkshire and the Humber Region of England.
In addition to the town of Doncaster, the borough covers Mexborough, Conisbrough, Thorne and Finningley, where the former Royal Air Force Vulcan bomber base was converted into a passenger airport, Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, opened in spring 2005.
The borough was created on April 1 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, as a merger of the former county borough of Doncaster along with the urban districts of Adwick le Street, Bentley with Arksey, Conisborough, Mexborough, Tickhill along with Doncaster Rural District and Thorne Rural District, the parish of Finningley from East Retford Rural District and small parts of the parish of Harworth from Worksop Rural District from Nottinghamshire.

Famous peopleHistorical
- George Boole
Boole made significant contributions in several areas of mathematics, but was immortalised for two works in 1847 and 1854, in which he represented logical expressions in a mathematical form now known as Boolean algebra. Boole's work was all the more impressive because, with the exception of elementary school and a short time in a commercial school, he was almost completely self-educated.
Boole created the concept of Boolean Algebra whilst strolling on Doncaster Town Fields one lunch time. Boole (originally from Lincoln) was working as an accountant on South Parade in Doncaster.
Thomas Crapper
Crapper was born in Thorne, near Doncaster and is famous for inventing the modern day waterfall flushing toilet. A stained glass window has been installed in St. Lawrence's church in the Doncaster village of Hatfield as a commemoration to this 19th century inventor.Modern Day
Kevin Keegan - International footballer.
Jeremy Clarkson - Journalist.
Leslie Garrett - World renowned opera singer.
Elected Mayor
It is widely thought that a Political scandal popularly known as Donnygate, was a major factor behind the residents of the area voting for the establishment of a directly-elected mayor in 2001. The first mayor, Martin Winter, representing the Labour Party, was elected in 2002 and successfully defended his post in 2005. The council as a whole has been dominated by the Labour Party traditionally, but in the 2004 local elections, they lost overall control of the council (though they retained more councillors than any other single party).
